Undergraduate

Summer Studentships

Groups in the centre may accept motivated undergraduate students to work on short research projects during the summer months. Students entering into the final year of their degree are generally preferred. Such studentships may be financially supported by successful grant applications (e.g. Biochemical Society, HRB, BSCB), by the group directly, or unpaid. Interested students should contact group leaders directly in advance of the summer.

Research Placements

Groups in the centre may be willing to host students interested in completing a research placement at the CCB as part of their undergraduate studies through Erasmus or other collaborative programmes. Students entering into the third or fourth year of their degree are generally preferred. Recent graduates can also be accepted. Interested students should contact group leaders directly well in advance of starting a placement (4-8 months).

Research Projects

Groups in the centre offer a limited number of research projects to undergraduate students as part of certain degree programmes at the university (e.g. BSc Biochemistry). Students of such programmes will be given the opportunity to apply for such projects and allocations will be made by the university. It is not necessary to contact group leaders in advance of project allocations, however, students are invited to read the research interests of group leaders before applying for research projects and may benefit from familiarising themselves with the research of a given group before commencing a project with that group.

Post-Graduate

Research Placement

Groups in the centre may accept recent graduates for a short internship. It is possible to avail of Erasmus funding to support this. Interested students should contact group leaders directly.

Research Assistant

Rarely, groups in the centre recruit research assistants which are salaried staff that help in the day-to-day running of the lab. Such positions will be advertised on the university website and in the international scientific media. Interested individuals with relevant experience should follow the application instructions. Research assistants have a fixed-term contract and do not earn an academic degree from their work.

Research Masters

Groups in the centre may occasionally offer funded research master opportunities. Such positions will be advertised on the university website and in the international scientific media. Interested individuals with relevant experience should follow the application instructions. Alternatively, interested individuals may contact group leaders directly to discuss acquiring individual funding to pursue a research masters with that group (e.g. Uni, College, GoI). Upon acceptance of a thesis (generally after two years), the student will be conferred with a MSc in their field. It is possible to convert from a research masters into a PhD.

PhD

Groups in the centre may occasionally offer funded PhD opportunities. Such positions will be advertised on the university website and in the international scientific media. Interested individuals with relevant experience should follow the application instructions. Alternatively, interested individuals may contact group leaders directly to discuss acquiring individual funding to pursue a PhD with that group (e.g. Uni, College, GoI).  Upon acceptance of a thesis and successful viva examination (generally after four years), the student will be conferred with a PhD in their field. It is possible to exit early from a PhD with a MSc.

Post-Doctorate

Groups in the centre may occasionally recruit post-doctoral researchers. Such positions will be advertised on the university website and in the international scientific media. Interested individuals with relevant experience should follow the application instructions. Alternatively, interested researchers may contact group leaders directly to discuss acquiring fellowships to pursue research with that group (e.g. GoI, Wellcome, Fulbright).

Principal Investigator

PIs interested in collaborating with or joining the centre should contact the director of the CCB (noel.lowndes@universityofgalway.ie) or a relevant group leader.
